    CALDERON: NO NAFTA TALKS
    January 26, 2009

Mexico President Felipe Calderon said that he had not discussed renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement with U.S. President Barack Obama. The Mexican government has expressed concern about Obama’s campaign promises to renegotiate NAFTA with its two partners, Mexico and Canada.

During a visit to the White House, Calderon praised NAFTA and said the agreement had created jobs on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border.

Calderon said Mexico was prepared to “look into, as we have always been willing to do, any issues of concern not only to Americans but also to Mexicans,” including environmental and labor-related issues.

Calderon, however, said he had not discussed renegotiating NAFTA with Obama. He said Obama told him in Washington that he would work to strengthen U.S. ties with Mexico, but Obama did not mention NAFTA in his remarks to reporters after their meeting.
